Q + A
YOU'VE GOT QUESTIONS. I'VE GOT ANSWERS.
Documentary sessions are a little different to the more common portrait sessions so questions are bound to come up. Here are a few Q+A to answer your questions and ease your concerns. If your question has not been answered here feel free to contact me.
WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED?
I am located in North Auckland, servicing the greater Auckland area. If you are outside of Auckland, please feel free to contact me to ask about travel costs.
I WON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO! WILL YOU HELP ME ALONG THE WAY?
Yes! I’ll be there every step of the way. We’ll have a pre-session consultation before your session, shoot me your questions, tell me about your every day family life, the special things that are happening right now and we’ll come up with the perfect session just for you.
BUT MY HOUSE ISN'T PICTURE PERFECT!
House not perfect? Fine by me! Seriously – if I invite you over, you will see chalk all over the balcony, odd ornaments all over the house, bath toys scattered around the bathtub, stained carpets, sofas, chairs, clothes – do you get the idea?
Although this is obviously not the perfect home – we have lived and loved in this home. Those ornaments? Carefully put together and painted by our three year old son – the best thing EVER! Those stained dining chairs, okay, their not pretty, but when I look back (when I’m obviously living in a cleaner, germ-free home!) I am seriously going to laugh! Memories – right there! My life – right there. that explains exactly what my life is like right now! It’s imperfectly perfect! Do you see what I mean?
Ok, another one. Chalk, all over the balcony? Perfection – I am never washing that off! Okay, maybe when the landlord comes around. But seriously, I love those drawings. We’ve been there. We’ve spent hours pouring over that cement to make it prettier than pretty! Imperfectly perfect – yet again.
Even though my house in not in perfect order, I’ve still taken thousands of photographs there.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL SESSION LOOK LIKE?
We’ll go about, doing every day things. If that means folding the laundry and your little helper (as always), ‘helps’ with the folding, then we’ll do that. Is your toddler usually jumping on the bed, on the couch or off something, or is your daughter playing ‘kitchen’, trying to get her younger siblings to do as she says or is she simply ignoring all of the chaos and in her corner reading a book? Capture it all, all of the craziness, all of the LOL moments, all of the love.
WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR?
Here’s a few guidelines. First off, make sure you and your family are comfortable! We don’t want your son itching to take off his clothes before we’ve already started. Coordinate but don’t match. Layers, accessories and textures add interest and a bit of colour will make your photo’s pop. Clothes without words or pictures are best as these can be distracting. Jeans and t-shirts, simple sun dresses, cozy sweaters or fun PJs for a morning session are all great choices. For newborn’s, there’s nothing cuter than a simple, solid onesie or wrap/blanket.
I HAVE A BIG FAMILY! HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN BE IN A SESSION?
Our 1-2 hour session is great for capturing a family of up to 5 people by giving each individual enough time for me to capture their personality. More family members might need a bit more time, please contact me about the details.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO SHOOT?
Sessions that take place outside are best taken two hours before sunset. This means that in the winter, start time can be as early as 3pm, or in the summer 6pm. If we are indoors times are more flexible.
I'M PREGNANT! (Congrats!) WHEN SHOULD I BOOK IN A MATERNITY/NEWBORN SESSION?
The best time to book maternity sessions is between 34-36 weeks (remember to contact me earlier to make sure I have these dates available). Your bump will be nice and round and you wont be too uncomfortable.
4-10 days is the best time to capture your baby’s smallness, freshness, and welcome to the world. One month captures a more alert baby.
WHERE WILL OUR SESSION TAKE PLACE?
This depends entirely on what your everyday looks like. If you and your family like to hang by the pool, take the dog out for a walk, or if you’re usually helping solve math problems after dinner, that’s what we’ll do and that’s where we’ll be!
WHAT IS A BOOKING FEE?
A booking fee is required for all sessions. It is a non-refundable fee to book your date in with me. It is not an add on cost but rather the amount is deducted from your session fee.
CAN WE STILL HAVE SOME PORTRAITS?
Yes, we’ll get a few of those traditional portraits that grandma so loves, or that you might want to hang on the wall, but the main focus will be to capture those real moments.
WHAT IF MY CHILDREN WON'T STAY STILL?
That’s the great thing about documentary style photography. They don’t have to! If your toddler loves to climb up tress, then lets do that, and capture what your life really is like at the moment. There’ll come a time when he’s not constantly viewing the world from up above and you’ll look back at these photo’s with a giggle.
WHAT DO OTHERS SAY ABOUT YOU?
I have received lots of wonderful compliments from clients. Find out what they’re saying.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE.
My photography style is very photojournalistic. I like to capture natural expressions and events as they occur. I will of course get a nice casual family photo but the main focus of the session will be about the activities you have planned beforehand.
Simple editing is done to all photo’s e.g. blemishes are retouched, skin softened, etc, but no major editing is done to stay true to the picture. Have a look at the galleries or view a session to get an idea of my editing style.
I DON'T LIVE IN AUCKLAND, BUT I LOVE YOUR WORK. HOW FAR ARE YOU WILLING TO TRAVEL?
If you've chosen location is within Auckland, that's great, because it's all covered with the session fee. Travel outside of Auckland will incur travel fees, please get in contact with me to see if I can make it and travel fees.
I'M READY TO BOOK!
Fantastic! I can’t wait to hear from you. Please get in touch, tell me what session you’re after and if you have a preferable session date or what days you and the family are all available for a session. If you have a little time on your hands, I'd love to hear about you and your family!
WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
You can pay through Paypal or bank deposit.
